Originally macrocyclic compounds capable of assuming a basket (or 'calix') shaped @C01258@. They are formed from p-@H02891@ @P04539@ and formaldehyde. The term now applies to a variety of derivatives by substitution of the hydrocarbon cyclo{@O04282@[(1,3-phenylene)@M03881@]}.
