Natural compounds containing alternating carbonyl and @M03881@ groups ('β-polyketones'), biogenetically derived from repeated condensation of acetyl @C01126@ A (via malonyl @C01126@ A), and usually the compounds derived from them by further condensations. Considered by many to be synonymous with the less frequently used terms acetogenins and ketides.
