In meteorology, the stability of the atmosphere in the vertical direction to vertical displacements. If Γ is the dry adiabatic lapse rate, dry air is stable if the lapse rate -dT/dz < Γ, unstable if -dT/dz > Γ and neutral -dT/dz = Γ.
