Organisms which require extreme physico-chemical conditions for their optimum growth
and proliferation. Extremophilic microorganisms are e.g. thermophiles
or psychrophiles, halophiles
, alkalophiles or acidophiles, osmophiles and barophiles, based on their growth at
extremes of temperature, salt
concentration, pH, osmolarity
or pressure, respectively.
