A term used to describe a @[email protected] process that involves a transfer of ionic species from the @[email protected] to the aqueous phase in exchange for ions from the aqueous phase. The term does not imply anything concerning the nature of the bonding in the extracted complex. The term solvent @[email protected] is not recommended.
